Nissan’s Water Conservation practices rooted in its value – Respect Others Respect Society

Nissan has been recognized by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a renowned environmental organization, for our global efforts on water security for the second consecutive year.

This recognition is a great honor for us at Nissan, both regionally and globally, as CDP's annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the global gold standard for corporate environmental transparency.

Our values at Nissan are directly linked with enriching people's lives, whether directly through our products or indirectly through the way we operate. These values reflect what we stand for, how we behave, how we respond to various successes and challenges, and how we aim to prepare the future roadmap for Nissan.

"Clean Water and Sanitation" being one of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal, makes water security an important issue. Therefore, saving water remains a crucial element for us at Nissan, both regionally and globally, as we continue to build on our commitment to sustainability in the region.

Water scarcity is one of the four key focus areas of the Nissan Green Program, our midterm environmental plan, which calls for a reduction of water intake at production sites and improving wastewater recycling efficiency. Other focus areas in the Nissan Green Program include climate change, resource dependency and air quality.

The efforts to reduce water intake under the Nissan Green Program can be seen in action at in operations in India, where we operate our RNAIPL manufacturing plant in Oragadam near Chennai.

The RNAIPL manufacturing plant in India has built three rainwater harvesting ponds where it saves 190,000 liters of rainwater storage. Thanks to this initiative, the entire RNAIPL plant is self-sustaining and does not require any additional water supply.

Additionally, our colleagues in India have been focused on promoting eco-friendly practices amongst consumers in an aim to improve wastewater recycling efficiency. Since 2014, over 9 million liters of water have been saved as customers opt to use the advanced foam wash technique to clean their cars instead of the traditional car wash, reducing water consumption by 45%.

As we gear towards our aim of reducing water intake by 21% at all our global production sites by 2022 (vs. 2010/per vehicle manufactured), we encourage all our employees to think of ways in which we can save water by exchanging ideas and taking key learnings from other regions.
